The 3rd Annual Al Hubbard Kids Fishing Experience
updated January 6, 2010
In 2008, the Bay Point Invitational introduced an event that was long over due – the Al Hubbard Kids Fishing Experience.
Designed for kids aged 8-14 who might not otherwise have the opportunity to go fishing, the event is limited to 30 children, half girls, half boys, who are chosen by our three charities—the Boys and Girls Club of Bay County, the Anchorage Children's Home and Gulf Coast Children’s Advocacy Center.
To date, the Al Hubbard Kids Fishing Experience has introduced over 50 kids to the joy of fishing. The intent of the event is to give the kids a safe and fun-filled afternoon on the water. It’s not important that they catch a big fish or have a huge fight on their hands - it’s all about the experience. Nothing compares to the joy on a kids face as they tell you about the wild heron they rustled from the reeds, or the pod of dolphin that came alongside, or the wonders they pulled from the deep.
For us it only made sense to name this magical event after one of our local legends, Al Hubbard.
Al loved fishing, but his real passion was introducing kids to the joys of a life spent outdoors on the water. He knew a child introduced to fishing at a young age was much more able to deal with issues life was sure to throw at them as they grew.
Whether it was Al's infectious smile that made it special, or simply his deep devotion to the sport, no young child could help wanting to give it a try. Al was, and remains, our ambassador for the sport of fishing; saltwater, fresh water, lake, river or bayou, it didn't matter to Al. He loved all of it.
Speaking of hometown heroes, none of this would be possible without the dozen or so local fishing guides that make it happen. These guys make their living on the water, and gladly give up a day of revenue for the chance to make a difference in a kid’s life. We honestly couldn’t do it without them.
The 2010 Al Hubbard Kids Fishing Experience will take place on Friday, July 16th starting with lunch at 11:30am, followed by three hours of fishing and an official weigh-in with weighmaster Craig Martin and tournament emcee Scott Rossman from 5:00-6:00pm.
